DUST EXPLOSION PREVENTION AT INDUSTRIAL AREAS
DUST EXPLOSION PREVENTION AT INDUSTRIAL AREAS  24 - 27/10/2010
Dust from organic substances can represent a flammable hazard and sometimes can be explosive as well.  This can happen in food, pharmaceutical, painting and agro-business activities, but the problem is that plant operators sometimes do not give the real importance to this hazard.  Dust explosion can be as harmful and deadly as gas explosion.  Dust explosion occurrence depends of three factors: presence of combustible dust in atmosphere (confined#not) and an ignition source.  Combustible dust is defined to be explosive when its particle size is lower than 420 µm. Other hazard is the combustible dust layer formation deposited on the plant floor#on the top of the equipments.  A layer thickness of 0.8 mm is hazardous when it is suspended and #s an atmosphere (cloud) that is considered to be explosive in presence of an ignition source.

When combustible dust is processed#handled, a potential deflagration hazard exists.  Its results depend on the type of combustible dust, confinement and type of process methods used.

Prevention studies, such as risk analysis, are an important tool to be applied to combustible dust processing areas.  This tool can be applied at the plant project with the use of process and instrumentation diagrams (PID), during the basic engineering phase,#to operation plant phase.  Plant safety can be improved based on the results of this evaluation. To enhance this evaluation the knowledge of the following combustible dust properties is quite helpful: particle size analysis (PSA); minimum explosive concentration (MEC); minimum ignition energy (MIE); minimum auto ignition temperature (MAIT) of dust cloud; minimum ignition temperature (MIT); dust layer ignition temperature (LIT); limiting oxygen concentration (LOC); electrical volume resistivity; etc.  These parameters can be reached in a test lab#some information can also be obtained at specialized literature.
